Newsletter - February 2007

This issue at a glance…

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

May 2007 be an adventurous and fulfilling year, both professionally and personally for all of us! Things were relatively quiet in 2006 for the DC Acupuncture Society. However, we anticipate more activity in 2007.

Our plan is to send you shorter but more frequent newsletters to keep you abreast of workshops and other news in a more timely fashion.

We’ll be meeting with our newly elected officials in D.C. The importance of time with those who make legislative decisions cannot be overstated. Our relationship with the committee head and staff members on the DC Health Committee is key to our involvement and influence of upcoming proposed changes that may affect our profession.

A representative of the National Association of Detox Acupuncture (NADA) contacted us to work with them in bringing addiction prevention and treatment services to DC. Currently, only licensed acupuncturists may perform acupuncture services. We would like to get your opinion on the matter:

-          What is your position on NADA in Washington, D.C.?

-          Are you in favor or opposed to it? Why?

-          Please send us an e-mail.

We now have a reciprocal agreement with the Maryland Acupuncture Society. If you are a member of the ASDC, you qualify for a 10% discount to MAS seminars. We still have a few details to work out (proof of membership), but we’ll update you in the next newsletter.

You've probably heard or read about the Acupuncture Alliance and AAOM union. If not, go to www.aaom.org or http://www.aomalliance.org for details. Unified representation at the national level is a huge step for our profession. Collaboration at the regional level (MAS, ASDC, VAS) also represents greater benefit to us and our profession. Now we need to work as a unified organization at the local level. Your membership to the ASDC will keep our focus and efforts alive.

                                                      Lisa Eaves, President

                                                      Acupuncture Society of Washington, DC

JOIN US!

Your membership is crucial.  We are a 100% volunteer organization, but to operate, we still need financial support. Your membership provides a website so that patients can find you. It also provides you with discounts to Maryland Acupuncture Society's fabulous seminars. You get purchase discounts with needle suppliers, book sellers and others. You ensure that your professional interests are represented in the city in which you have chosen to work. You can meet with other professionals with whom you can exchange ideas and information. You stay informed of local seminars and conferences.

The Acupuncture Society of Washington, DC can only function with your support. Renew your membership today. Join us so that we can continue and improve our services to you. Work with us to become a more vital, productive organization.

I would like to challenge each current member to recruit just one more professional to join this year. We can double our size in one year with just this small effort.

Renew or Join today. Without local representation, our high standards of excellence in training, education and certification could be undermined by other professions seeking to practice without appropriate training. See “Dry Needling” by physical therapists in Virginia. It’s happening right across the river.

If you are passionate about your work, be passionate about your profession.

Dry Needling by PHYSICAL THERAPISTS in Virginia

The Virginia Acupuncture Society is contending with physical therapists who perform acupuncture without proper training. These physical therapists are calling it "dry needling" or "intramuscular stimulation". To read the details, go to http://www.acusova.com/legislative.htm.  In 2003-2004 the Acupuncture Society of D.C. (ASDC) had a similar situation with a group of naturopathic physicians who wished to include acupuncture in their scope of practice without sufficient training.

Essentials of Auriculotherapy

Terry Oleson, Ph.D.

While the majority of acupuncture and East Asian medicine practitioners in the United States have favored body acu-point treatment techniques, there is an increasing focus on the therapeutic effectiveness of utilizing ear reflex points. Many individuals are surprised to learn that auriculotherapy can not only be just as clinically effective as body acupuncture and/or acupressure, but also can relieve pain and tension much more rapidly than stimulation of the classical acupuncture meridians.

AAAOM 14th Annual Conference

The AOM Alliance is pleased to present this year's conference at The Hampton Inn – Convention Center, located near the vibrant French Quarter of New Orleans. Built in the 1900's, this historic landmark has been completely renovated. The Hampton Inn was fortunate to not be damaged by the Katrina flood. You can be assured of a pleasant and comfortable stay while helping to support the continued economic re-building of the city.

We will be offering several extended programs so attendees can participate in a deeper learning experience. We chose one presentation per topic, including Oncology Acupuncture from the staff of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Advanced Acupuncture Techniques in Gynecology, the Working Class Acupuncture training program, the Didactic Portion of the NADA training, Taoist I Ching Medicine and more.
